Stationary Strides/Improving Your Stride Off The Ice

So often I come across players that believe the only way to improve hockey stride is with skates, either ice or in-line. This is completely untrue. There is so much you can do off the ice to improve hockey stride.

Please keep in mind that proper hockey stride is simply performing a specific motion enough until it becomes engrained in your muscle memory. Even if this movement is incorrect, it will become a habit. This is why it is so important to perform every thing you do properly because these movements build more memory and becomes habit.

Pointers: Make sure knees are bent to the point where knees are at least two inches out in front of the toes. I even have players exaggerate this to a certain extent. Keep in mind that all these movements will be diminished when you are on the ice so a little exaggeration here will help when you are on the ice.

One partner holds his hand on the other partner’s head. The player
performing the exercise gets into position. Knees bent back straight
and head up. The partner now holds the player at that level the whole
exercise.

The player will now left stride. Notice the 45* angle back and to the side.
Notice the deep knee bend and the proper arm swing. Head is up and butt is low.
A toe push would also be nice here also known as a toe flick.
The player will now return to center and perform a right stride.
